Tickets cost £8 per person and are available now from eventbrite.

On Saturday 9th March 2019 Cambridge Ladybirds will be hosting a number of truly inspiring women, who will share their thoughts, work and ideas to mark International Women’s Day.

Art work by Jo Beale

The afternoon will include some fascinating talks from the following speakers

Dr Adelene Buckland, Senior Lecturer in English Literature at King’s College London: Mechanical Mothers: a Brief History of the ‘Natural’ Mother

Kathleen Richardson, Professor of Ethics and Culture of Robots and AI at De Montfort University: Do sex robots symbolise a Brave New World or a crisis of attachment?

Katja Leyendeker, Northumbria University: Women in Cycle Activism – Uk and Germany

Ruth Kern: Amplified – Ruth discusses starting stand-up in her very late 30s, the power of creativity to challenge assumptions and talking about her sex-life on stage in front of her parents and her friend’s teenage sons.

Deirdre Kelly, Campaigner for Together for Yes: How the 8th Was Won – working to repeal the abortion ban in Ireland.

Ruth Turner, Cambridge Ladybirds President and Artist: Craftivism and The Feminisation of Public Space

The festival will also feature stalls and displays from like minded community organisations to give a snapshot of the work going on in the local area around women’s rights, the environment and social improvement.

Finally it would not be a WI event without WI refreshments and a raffle with some fabulous prizes reflecting the theme of the day. All this will be happening at the fantastic Story’s Field Centre in Eddington.

The Cambridge Ladybirds is a progressive branch of the WI, which formed in Central Cambridge 5 years ago. The group is made up of women of all ages and backgrounds from across the greater Cambridge area who share a belief that through supporting each other they can make positive change within the community and the lives of their members.

“We believe that community isn’t just about living in the same place, it’s about coming together to find ways of supporting each other; over the last 5 years that’s what the Ladybirds have worked towards. I think that now we have a strong community within our group it’s time to start giving something to the wider community we are part of, which is why we decided to host this event. We always say the Ladybirds is about the 3 F’s – Friends, Fun and Feminism so if that sounds like something you could be interested in then you should come along” – Ruth Turner.

This event is open to all, however some content in the talks may not be suitable for young children.

Tickets cost £8 per person and are available now from eventbrite.

Cambridge Ladybirds WI meets at 7.30pm on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Our venue is The Friends Meeting House on Jesus Lane, Cambridge. We welcome all those who identify as female as are 18 or over. Please contact us at cambridge.ladybirds@gmail.com for more information or to visit.
